Obtaining Insurance Approval

1.  If you have been referred to us by your Physician,  Genetic Testing Lab or  Oncology Clinic,  it is likely that you do not need to be concerned about billing which will be covered under contract. Please go directly to Patients (Check-In) to complete your forms and then to  Appointments to schedule your appointment.  We will check all appointments, and will notify you if there are any costs (other than Co-payments or deductibles, which are your responsibility to know) .

2.  Please Contact Us through the homepage of our website to learn whether your insurer is contracted with Genetic Counseling Services.  You may also call the number on the back of your insurance card to find out where your insurer allows genetic counseling.  You may need the NPI number to do this: for Genetic Counseling Services this is 1609183151. CPT code information is 96040.

3.   If your insurer is not contracted with us, please Contact Us  to learn whether there is a hospital clinic where we can see you and bill your insurance.   You will be responsible for your co-payment ( if you have one) at the time of your on-site visit.  If you have not yet met your deductible, your payment will be required as well.

4.   If your insurer is not contracted with us, or does not offer genetic counseling through a Board Certified Genetic Counselor, or if you are not located near a contracted clinic, you may consider our Self-Pay Option or locate a genetic counselor through the National Society of Genetic Counselors website (nsgc.org).

Discussions with a genetic counselor as offered by Genetic Laboratories and Genetic Testing Companies serve to provide key information for the understanding of genetic testing, although pedigree intake and record review may be focused to the results of genetic testing.  Although laboratory license and permit and genetic counselor certification and licensure where applicable, do not permit the practice of medicine, genetic counselors can provide explanation and direction to physicians and authorized medical professionals for the interpretation of the results of genetic testing.  Genetic counselors, upon physician waiver and in collaboration with ordering clinicians, can provide counseling on genetic testing and the meaning of test results. Comprehensive genetic counseling may be available through physicians who can provide genetic counseling within the scope of their practices as they choose and through genetic counselors within the scope of their practice. Please note that patient management and genetic counseling surrounding on-going prenatal or any diagnostic testing is best handled by Physicians, Maternal/Fetal and Pediatric Genetics specialists,  in conjunction with clinical services where they are available and in collaboration with genetic counselors and other genetic specialists.
